Anna first picked up a tennis racket at the age of five. Her parents, Sergei and Alla, wanted their daughter to grow up healthy and took part in sports competitions, as well as weekly sports programs for children. Anna just liked tennis, but she never imagined herself a star. Only at the age of seven years old Kournikova realized that she has an extraordinary talent. She became more serious about training. At that time, Anna took part in her first tournament. A year later, Kournikova won an open tennis tournament, held in Moscow. At that time, Anna began to take part in tournaments outside of the Russian Federation. She was 10 when, during a speech in Italy, Bollettieri proposed a scholarship for her in Bradenton, Florida.

In contrast to Russia, where training opportunities have been limited by the material factor, as well as unfavorable weather conditions, the academy gave Anna a tennis outfit and sparring partners. Kournikova made Bollettieri so impressed that he once said: "Anna - the best among the promising young tennis players. We saw Agassi, Courier, Seles, but how plays Kournikova, leads me to an indescribable joy. "

On the way to the semi-final, Kournikova defeated fifth-ranked Iva Majoli and Anke Huber, standing in the tenth position. The successful performance of Anna led the public to talk about the ascension of a new star.
